Earlier this year, Big Lots, the popular discount store, announced it would close all of its locations after filing for bankruptcy under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. The retailer was acquired by Variety Wholesalers and is now making a comeback with reopenings in several states across the country. Here’s where the stores will be located.

Where will Big Lots stores reopen?

Variety Wholesalers acquired 219 Big Lots stores, which are currently in the process of reopening. These locations will return with renovations, new product categories, and more clearance deals. Some stores already reopened in April, and others will reopen in May in two phases: the first on Thursday, May 1, and the second on Thursday, May 15.

Why did Big Lots close its stores?

In September 2024, Big Lots filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, shortly after revealing plans to close over 400 stores nationwide. At the time, the company explained that the closures were part of a sale agreement with a subsidiary of Nexus Capital Management LP. There was hope for a possible rescue when approval was granted to sell most of its assets and operations to Nexus. However, those hopes were dashed in December of that year when the sale fell through.

What is Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code?

Filing for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11 means that a company is on the brink of ceasing operations, but believes it can recover its success if given the opportunity to reorganize its assets, debts, and business operations.

By filing under Chapter 11, the company seeks protection from creditors while restructuring its business and debt. This type of protection is available to corporations, individual entrepreneurs, and partnerships. Under Chapter 11, the company’s management continues to oversee daily operations. However, major business decisions must be approved by the bankruptcy court.
