History of Pop-Tarts

In 1963, William E. LaMothe, president of Kellogg—known as Bill—had a revolutionary idea: to turn the traditional breakfast into a convenient rectangle that could be toasted and taken anywhere. To make it happen, he turned to the creative “Doc” Joe Thompson and his culinary team, who developed an innovative alternative to the usual toast and jam breakfast. The first proposed name was “Fruit Scone,” but it didn’t have much appeal. Inspired by the booming pop culture of the 1960s, they went with a catchier, more modern name: “Pop-Tarts.”

In 1964, a year after its invention, Cleveland, Ohio witnessed the debut of the four original flavors: strawberry, blueberry, brown sugar cinnamon, and apple currant. The new product quickly caught public attention. Cleveland briefly became the epicenter of Pop-Tarts mania, but the product’s popularity soon spread across the U.S., becoming an iconic national breakfast.

In 1971, in an effort to strengthen ties with younger consumers, Kellogg introduced Milton the Toaster as the brand’s official mascot. Although he had a brief moment in the spotlight, his fame was short-lived.

Innovation didn’t stop there. In 1994, Kellogg expanded the brand’s portfolio by launching a toaster cereal inspired by the original Pop-Tarts flavors. Since then, the brand has continued to evolve with new products and flavors, staying relevant for generations of consumers.
