What is National Pita Day?

National Pita Day is celebrated on March 29 and is dedicated to honoring the tradition of dipping, using scoops, and wrapping a wide variety of ingredients in this delicious bread. The celebration first appeared on social media in 2021 and has since grown rapidly in popularity.

What is pita?

Pita is a flat, circular bread with double leavening, originating from the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and surrounding regions. While there are many variations, its traditional recipe includes flour, water, yeast, and salt. Pita is typically baked at high temperatures, causing the water in the dough to evaporate, making the bread puff up and form a pocket inside.

Origin of pita bread

Pita bread dates back to the Stone Age, around 2.4 million years ago. During this time, the Natufian people, in what is now Jordan, made a type of flatbread using wild grains. However, unlike modern pita bread, it did not form a pocket. The first reference to pita bread as we know it today dates back to around 1936.
