Founded in 1960, Domino’s Pizza is the largest pizza company in the world, with a significant share in both delivery and carryout services. The company pioneered the use of patented thermal bags to keep pizzas hot during delivery. It also invented the corrugated pizza box, designed to prevent moisture damage and keep the cheese from sticking to the lid.

Today, the company ranks among the leading global restaurant brands, operating over 21,300 stores in more than 90 markets. In 2024, it reported over $19.1 billion in global retail sales. The system is made up of independent franchise owners, who accounted for 99% of its stores by the end of Q4 2024.

What is the number 1 pizza chain in the U.S.?

Domino’s is the largest pizza chain in the United States, having positioned itself as the favorite among pizza consumers.

Where was pizza invented?

Pizza, a dish commonly associated with Italian cuisine, has roots that date back to ancient times, although its exact origin and the meaning of its name remain debated. Although records of similar foods exist from ancient times, the term “pizza” doesn’t appear in historical documents until around the year 1000, according to the Neapolitan Superintendency. An example of these documents is a text from 1195 from the Abruzzo region in Italy.

In the 14th century, the Roman Curia (the administrative and judicial organs of the Catholic Church) also referred to baked products similar to pizza, mentioning terms like “pizis” and “pissas.” Additionally, in 1535, Benedetto Di Falco, in his work Description of the Ancient Places of Naples, noted that, in the 16th century, what we now know as focaccia was called “pizza” in Naples.

By the 18th century, it was being prepared in small establishments with wood-fired ovens and sold on the streets, becoming a popular dish. These records provide some clues about the origins of pizza.

What does the word “pizza” mean?

The etymology of the word “pizza” comes from the term “pinsa,” which is the participle of the Latin verb “pinsere,” meaning to crush, flatten, or stamp. This origin is closely linked to the process of preparing the dough, which is pressed to achieve a flat texture.

What are the most popular pizzas?

Pizza comes in a wide variety of types and can be combined with almost any ingredient; however, some have become favorites among pizza lovers. These are the most popular:

  • Cheese and pepperoni
  • Ham and hearts of palm
  • Margherita
  • Hawaiian
  • Chicken
  • Ham and bacon
  • Neapolitan
  • Four cheese
  • Egg and bacon
  • Smoked salmon and cream cheese
