L’artista in rapida ascesa ci racconta del suo progetto Mood Child e del suo percorso evolutivo nel campo della musica elettronica, tra sperimentazione sonora e ricerca di un’identità autentica.

Manda Moor è una dj e produttrice franco-filippino-danese che negli ultimi anni si è affermata come una delle figure più interessanti della scena internazionale di musica elettronica. Il suo sound, profondamente radicato nel calore della Chicago house e attraversato dalle pulsazioni della club culture contemporanea, riflette una visione musicale al tempo stesso coerente e aperta alla sperimentazione.

Questa identità artistica trova piena espressione in Mood Child, il progetto che ha co-fondato con Sirus Hood e che si è rapidamente evoluto in un’etichetta e collettivo dal forte spirito identitario.

Abbiamo parlato con Manda in un momento particolarmente intenso del suo percorso: divisa tra la vita in tour e lo sviluppo di nuovi progetti musicali. Ci ha raccontato, con sincerità, il valore del sostegno ricevuto: il suo impegno nella costruzione di un’identità sonora unica e l’importanza di restare fedeli a sé stessi in uno scenario che si evolve costantemente.

Benvenuta su Parkett, Manda! Come stai? Come stanno andando i tuoi progetti in questo momento?

Ciao ragazzi, grazie per avermi invitata. Al momento sono in viaggio mentre vi scrivo. I miei progetti stanno andando bene, con la mia etichetta Mood Child e anche su altre. Le tempistiche sono un po’ più lente a causa dei tour, ma non posso lamentarmi: sono davvero fortunata a poter vivere facendo ciò che amo.

Durante il tuo percorso, c’è sempre stato qualcuno che ha davvero creduto in te come artista? In che modo questo ha influenzato la tua carriera?

Sono fortunata a poter dire che ci sono molte persone che hanno creduto in me: il mio partner in crime Sirus Hood, il mio team che mi piace chiamare “the vibe crew“, il mio agente e fratello da un’altra madre Ed (Arcade Talent Team), sono stati con me fin dall’inizio. Un ringraziamento speciale al mio caro amico Nick Yates: ho firmato la mia prima release in assoluto con la sua etichetta Kaluki, e non dimenticherò mai il suo supporto. Penso anche a Jamie Jones e alla famiglia Paradise, che mi hanno accolto e mi hanno fatto vivere un sogno. Non riesco a esprimere quanto sia grata a tutte le persone che ho incontrato e che hanno contribuito al mio percorso.

Il tuo remix di “Watch Them Come” di Roy Davis Jr. è appena uscito. Cosa ti ha ispirata e come lo hai reso tuo?

L’originale ha un posto speciale nel mio cuore, per me è stato un enorme onore remixare una traccia così leggendaria di un artista come Roy Davis Jr. Inizialmente gli avevo chiesto l’a cappella per inserirla nei miei DJ set, poi è stato lui a propormi un remix ufficiale. Mi sono messa molta pressione addosso per non rovinare la sua magia ahah. Ho voluto aggiungere la mia batteria speziata e renderla più adatta al club, lasciando però che la voce di Peven Everett raccontasse la storia.

La tua etichetta Mood Child è stata nominata come “Hype Label of the Year” che verrà assegnata all’IMS. Cosa significa per te questo riconoscimento?

È un traguardo enorme per me e Sirus Hood, abbiamo creato questo progetto due anni fa, ci abbiamo messo l’anima, e vedere che sta crescendo così velocemente è la sensazione più bella del mondo. È un vero onore avere la possibilità di essere riconosciuti come Hype Label of the Year da un’istituzione importante come Beatport.

Il tuo sound fonde la Chicago House anni ’90 con il groove techno moderno. Qual è il segreto per mantenere fresco questo equilibrio?

Mi piace sempre mescolare i ritmi caldi e classici con i suoni new school di oggi: rendere omaggio a ciò che ha plasmato questa musica che amiamo così tanto è molto importante per me.

Paradise Ibiza ha avuto un ruolo importante nel tuo percorso. Qual è il tuo momento più indimenticabile della residency?

Assolutamente, è sempre stato il mio evento preferito sin dai primi giorni in cui andavo a ballare, e farne parte ancora oggi è surreale. Ogni serata Paradise è speciale per me, ma tra i momenti più memorabili ci sono sicuramente quando ho suonato sulla mitica Terrace dell’Amnesia Ibiza oppure nella gigantesca sala del Drumsheds e ovviamente gli after-party magici di Ibiza. Sono super entusiasta per ciò che arriverà, come il Paradise Festival a Londra il 2 agosto.

Mood Child è più di una semplice etichetta: è un movimento. Cosa c’è nel cuore di questo progetto?

Il concetto di Mood Child è mostrare diversi mood, attraverso DJ set o release musicali. Come etichetta, abbiamo la particolarità di pubblicare album di vari artisti con un mood specifico, come Wild Moods, Dreamy Moods, Trippy Moods, e album di artisti regolari del collettivo come Marian Moods e Malikk Moods. Alcune uscite vengono stampate anche su vinile, come la nostra serie Various Moods.

Ogni settimana offriamo alla nostra community dei DJ tools e occasionalmente dei sample pack, come l’ultimo del leggendario house gangster DJ Sneak. Come party, invitiamo i DJ a suonare nel modo più unico possibile, tracce che hanno sempre voluto proporre ma non hanno mai osato, saltando da un mood o genre all’altro, dalle happy disco vibes ai dark minimal grooves, dai ritmi tropicali ai trippy sounds, mantenendo ovviamente una certa coerenza. L’obiettivo non è solo quello di hypeare un club, ma anche creare una storia ed esprimere la propria cultura.

Abbiamo anche una forte identità visiva grazie ai nostri incredibili designer: Sami Galetto dalla Thailandia, che riesce a tradurre la nostra visione in artworks unici, e mio fratello minore Mark, che cura le animations per ogni release e flyer del party. E naturalmente una grande famiglia Mood Child composta da oltre 100 artisti di talento che hanno pubblicato sull’etichetta.

Cosa possiamo aspettarci da te a Ibiza quest’estate? Qualche sorpresa interessante in arrivo?

Ho un calendario molto ricco e stimolante a Ibiza quest’anno. Suonerò per la prima volta in nuovi club come UNVRS, la Club Room dell’Hï, Tantra, Cova Santa, 528, e sarò anche sul palco di Ushuaïa, Pacha e Club Chinois. Non vedo l’ora che inizi la stagione, sento che sarà qualcosa di speciale! Ibiza è sempre piena di sorprese…

Qual è il miglior consiglio che daresti agli artisti emergenti che cercano di entrare nella scena della musica elettronica? Considerando ogni aspetto: produzione, estetica e presenza sui social media.

Il focus dovrebbe essere sempre sulla music production: fai musica che saresti entusiasta di suonare. Lavora sodo anche sulla ricerca musicale (digging) per i tuoi DJ set, sii diverso, cerca di non proporre ciò che tutti gli altri stanno già suonando, e costruisci il tuo sound e il tuo style personale. L’aspetto visivo e i social media vengono molto dopo, ma se curati bene possono essere un valore aggiunto.

Non confrontare il tuo percorso con quello degli altri, rimani fedele a te stesso, sii gentile e prenditi il tempo che ti serve: le cose belle non dovrebbero mai essere affrettate. Costruisci la tua crew, quella in cui puoi fidarti ad occhi chiusi, frequenta i tuoi party preferiti, continua a lasciarti ispirare.

Rising artist shares the story of her Mood Child project and her evolution in the electronic music industry, navigating between sonic experimentation and the pursuit of an authentic identity.

Manda Moor is a French-Filipino-Danish DJ and producer who has emerged in recent years as one of the most compelling figures in the international electronic music scene. Her sound, deeply rooted in the warmth of Chicago house and infused with the pulse of contemporary club culture, reflects a musical vision that is both consistent and open to experimentation. This artistic identity finds full expression in Mood Child, the project she co-founded with Sirus Hood, which has rapidly evolved into a label and collective with a strong and distinctive spirit.

We spoke with Manda during a particularly intense chapter of her journey: caught between life on tour and the development of new musical projects, she shared with honesty and passion the value of the support she’s received, her commitment to building a unique sonic identity, and the importance of staying true to oneself in a constantly evolving landscape.

Welcome to Parkett, Manda! How are you? How are things going with your projects right now?

Hi guys, thanks for having me. Currently on the road as I’m writing this. My projects are doing well, with my label Mood Child and also on others. Taking a bit more time than I expected due to touring, but I can’t complain, I’m very blessed to be doing what I love the most as a living.

Throughout your journey, has there always been someone who truly believed in you as an artist? How has this impacted your career?

I’m blessed to say there are many people who believed in me: my partner in crime Sirus Hood, my team which I like to call “the vibe crew”, my agent and brother from another mister Ed (Arcade Talent Team), they were there since my humble start. Special shoutout to my dear friend Nick Yates, I signed my first release ever on his label Kaluki, and I will never forget his support. Also thinking of Jamie Jones and the Paradise family, who took me in and made me live the dream. Can’t express how grateful I am for all the people I met and contributed to my journey.

Your remix of Roy Davis Jr.’s “Watch Them Come” just dropped. What inspired you, and how did you make it your own?

The original has a big place in my heart, and to me, it’s a huge honour to remix such a legendary track from a legend like Roy Davis Jr. I initially asked him for the accapella to incorporate it in my DJ sets, then he proposed me to an official remix. I put myself under a lot of pressure to not butcher its magic haha. I wanted to put my own spicy drums in there and make it more “club” friendly, while letting the vocals of Peven Everett tell the story.

Your label Mood Child has been nominated for “Hype Label of the Year” to be decided at IMS. What does this recognition mean to you?

It’s a huge milestone for Sirus Hood and I, we created this project 2 years ago, poured our soul into it, and to see it flourish so fast is the most amazing feeling. It’s a true honour to have a chance to be recognized as Hype Label of the Year by such a big entity like Beatport.

Your sound blends 90s Chicago House with modern groove-driven techno. What’s the secret to keeping this balance fresh?

I always like to blend the warm classic rhythms with the new school sounds of today, paying tribute to what shaped this music that we love so much is very important to me.

Paradise Ibiza has been a big part of your journey. What’s your most unforgettable moment from your residency?

Absolutely, it’s always been my favourite event since my early clubbing days, and to be part of it still feels surreal. Every Paradise gathering is special to me, but some of my highlights include playing on the mythical Terrace of Amnesia in Ibiza, also the enormous room of Drumsheds, and of course the magical Ibiza after-parties. Very excited for what’s coming, like the Paradise Festival in London on August 2nd.

Mood Child is more than just a label: it’s a movement. What’s at the heart of this project?

The concept of Mood Child is to showcase different moods, throughout DJ sets or music releases. As a label, we have the particularity of releasing albums from various artists with a specific mood, like Wild Moods, Dreamy Moods, Trippy Moods, and albums from regular artists on the imprint like Marian Moods and Malikk Moods. Some releases are pressed on vinyl, like our Various Moods series.

Every week, we provide our community with DJ tools, and occasionally sample packs, like the last one from the legendary house gangster DJ Sneak. As a party, we invite DJs to play in their most unique way, tracks they always wanted to play but never dared, jumping from a mood or genre to another, from happy disco vibes to dark minimal grooves, from tropical rhythms to trippy sounds, while of course keeping coherence. The goal here isn’t just to hype a club but also to create a story and express their culture.

We also have a strong visual identity thanks to our amazing designers: Sami Galetto from Thailand, who can translate our vision into unique artworks, and my little brother Mark, who does the animations for each release and party flyer. And of course, a big Mood Child family of 100+ talented artists who have released on the label.

What can we expect from you in Ibiza this summer? Any exciting surprises on the way?

I have a busy and exciting Ibiza schedule this year, I’ll be playing new clubs for the first time like UNVRS, The Club Room of Hï, Tantra, Cova Santa, 528, and will also be playing Ushuaïa, Pacha, and Club Chinois. I can’t wait for the season to start, I feel it’s going to be special! Ibiza is always full of surprises…

What’s the best advice you’d give to emerging artists trying to break into the electronic music scene? Considering every aspect: productions, aesthetics, and social media presence.

The focus should be on the music production first, always make music that you would be excited to play. Work hard on music digging for your DJ sets, be different, try not to play what everyone else plays, and establish your own sound and style. Looks and social media are very much secondary but when it’s well taken care of, it’s a good added value. Don’t compare your journey with others, stay true to yourself, be kind, and take the time you need: good things shouldn’t be rushed. Build your crew that you can trust with your eyes closed, attend your favourite parties, keep being inspired.
