GAC Aion V rolls off assembly line at Thailand plant – another CKD model to be added later this year

The first unit of the GAC Aion V has rolled off the automaker’s assembly plant in Thailand, several months after the company’s first overseas plant opened in July last year. Construction of the plant, which is located in the in Rayong province of Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), began at the end of January 2024 with a substantial investment of 2.3 billion baht (about RM299 million).

The facility has an annual production of capacity of 50,000 units in the first phase, which will be expanded to 100,000 units in the future. According to a report by Gasgoo, Wang Haoyong, head of GAC International’s Southeast Asia operations, said the Thailand plant will add another locally produced (CKD) model later this year. The Aion V is available in the Land of Smiles in a single 602 Luxury variant, priced at 1,029,900 baht (RM134k).

“I sincerely thank all team members for their dedication. In just 15 months since the plant’s construction began, we have successfully achieved mass production of the Aion V. Today’s rollout marks another key milestone in our ‘One GAC 2.0’ global strategy and underscores our firm commitment to sustainable development worldwide,” said Wei Haigang, general manager of GAC International.

GAC Group aims to establish Thailand as a production and export hub for electric vehicles (EVs) in Southeast Asia. At this year’s Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS), the company introduced its ‘One GAC 2.0’ and ‘Thailand Action Plan’ strategies.

The latter saw the introduction of the UT and M8, both of which are currently on pre-sale in Thailand. The company also plans to open 80 new dealerships across the country by 2025 as well as promote local charging infrastructure.
