What are better excuses to talk to classmates besides saying "do you know what the teacher is saying?" If someone criticizes you for talking to them, you could say I'm trying to help a friend find a study group/tutor or the teacher asked me to survey students so they can figure out what the class doesn't understand. If they say no, you could introduce them to the smart person in class, and ask the smart person for quid pro quo.
