Gadi Sassoon – Modes of Vibration

We’re thrilled to host Modes of Vibration by Gadi Sassoon on our webzine—an extraordinary ambient and electronic release that stretches the imagination of what music can be in our time. With this third full-length album, the Italian classically trained composer and transmedia artist crafts a bold, sensory journey that moves beyond sound, immersing the listener in a dialogue between physical resonance and digital abstraction.

At its core, Modes of Vibration is a 12-track sonic exploration divided into two halves. The first six tracks are sourced directly from live recordings of Sassoon’s sculpture-based synth installation—an intricate fusion of four metal plates and custom electronics, designed to produce unique acoustic resonances. These initial compositions feel raw yet meticulously composed, an aural representation of vibrating matter brought to life. The rhythms here are subtle, often emerging from the textures themselves rather than from traditional percussive structures. Basslines pulse like seismic tremors, organically shaped by the reverberations of the metal plates, never overpowering but foundational in their presence.

Sassoon’s synth work is remarkable throughout—textural, exploratory, and deeply evocative. Rather than seeking melody in a conventional sense, the synths generate environments. Tones oscillate between warm analog hums and sharp metallic shimmers, constantly evolving as if breathing with the installation itself. The atmosphere across the album is immersive and contemplative—ideal for deep listening sessions where nuance and detail unfold with each repeat play.

The second half of the album shifts into more human and synthetic terrains. Vocal textures and instrumental fragments begin to emerge, blurring the lines between the organic and the algorithmic. Here, Sassoon employs experimental algorithms and analogue techniques to extend the acoustic resonance of the installation into new dimensions. Especially notable are the closing tracks, where orchestral arrangements intertwine with AI-generated counterparts trained on ten hours of Sassoon’s previous works. The result is a deeply moving duet between human expression and machine interpretation.

Another standout moment comes with a live piano performance digitally enhanced by the installation’s “digital twin,” further reinforcing the album’s theme: a continuous tension and harmony between tangible and virtual, composition and computation.

What makes Modes of Vibration so compelling is not just its sound design, but the concept behind it. Sassoon doesn’t merely offer an album—he invites us into an ecosystem. With its roots in visual and physical art installations, the project also includes a groundbreaking live show and Tetrad, a virtual instrument that lets artists explore the sonic DNA of Sassoon’s sculptural synth in their own creations. This gesture opens the project to collaboration, experimentation, and community.

In an era defined by the convergence of technology and creativity, Modes of Vibration stands as a visionary work. It challenges what it means to experience music, pushing ambient and electronic forms into new realms of artistic expression. Gadi Sassoon is not just composing tracks—he’s sculpting sound in space and time. And we’re honored to be a part of the conversation.
