What are the Seraphites? Here’s what you don’t know about the cult in The Last of Us
The third episode of the second season of The Last of Us, on Max, introduces a new and very dangerous faction: the Seraphites

The second season of The Last of Us has undoubtedly captivated Max viewers. Each episode has intensified the mystery and tension… especially with the recent appearance of the Seraphites in episode three. Those who have already played the video game on which the series is based probably know what we’re talking about, but if you have no idea, here we explain who these characters are and what role they play in the series.
Who are the Seraphites in The Last of Us?
The third episode of the second season of The Last of Us introduces a new and dangerous faction: the Seraphites, also known as Scars. This group of religious fanatics emerged in Seattle between 2013 and 2014, just a few years after the Cordyceps fungus outbreak collapsed civilization.
Identifiable by smile-shaped scars carved into their cheeks — an initiation ritual symbolizing total devotion to their faith — the Seraphites impose strict rules on their members: men must shave their heads completely, while women wear crowned braids as a symbol of devotion and spiritual purity.

The group was founded by an enigmatic figure known only as The Prophet, who interpreted the infection as divine punishment for humanity’s excesses, pointing to technology and modern lifestyles as the cause of the disaster. Inspired by her teachings, the Seraphites live apart from everything related to the “Old World“: they grow their own food, reject technology, build with natural materials, and strive to live in complete harmony with nature.
Although their doctrine preaches simplicity and the rejection of modern violence, in practice they are brutally effective. Their combat methods are primitive but deadly: bows, knives, axes, and silent ambushes. They communicate through coded whistles, making them stealthy and feared hunters.
Their main rival is the Washington Liberation Front (WLF), also known as the Wolves. The intense war between both groups for control of Seattle fuels one of the harshest and most complex conflicts in both the video game and the series.
What will The Last of Us Part 2 be about?
The series, adapted from a video game, will follow Joel and Ellie five years later as they fight against hordes of zombies and beings infected by the Cordyceps virus.
After the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie have managed to enjoy a period of peace. However, their shared past will soon resurface, pushing them to confront a world that becomes increasingly threatening and hostile. The relationship between the two protagonists will grow tense as they face an unexpected conflict.
How many episodes will The Last of Us Part 2 have?
According to what has been revealed, the second season of the series will consist of seven episodes full of action and drama, which will be released one by one each Sunday.
