Phil Mickelson claims LIV’s team format is better than Ryder Cup as Bryson DeChambeau ends two-year drought in Korea

Bryson DeChambeau put a run of near misses firmly behind him with a dominant LIV Golf victory in South Korea. The American fell out of contention at The Masters playing alongside eventual winner Rory McIlroy in Sunday’s final round. But there were so such blips as made six birdies on a blazing back nine to score 66 and finish two shots ahead of Charles Howell III on 19-under. It was the two-time Major winner’s third LIV triumph and he was delighted to rediscover his killer instinct. “I’ve been playing great golf, just haven’t gotten the job done,” DeChambeau said. “That was a lot of tension and I’m glad I was able to step up to the plate and get it done.” DeChambeau and Howell both play for Crushers GC, who unspurprisingly won the team event. “Charles and I had a great battle out there,” said the team captain. “He never wavered today. It was fun and we had a great time today, but it was intense. Super-intense.” Fellow LIV star Phil Mickelson is another of LIV’s biggest draws and the 45-time winner on the PGA Tour The six-time Major champion also has 12 Ryder Cup appearances and came up with a hot take that may be sacrilegious to many purists, claiming LIV’s team format is better than the Europe-USA showdown. “I have a lot of great, special moments from US team golf in the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup,” he told LIV’s YouTube channel. “I had 25 straight years of that, and it was awesome, but it was only one week a year. After Europe triumphed on home soil two years ago, there is sure to be a raucous atmosphere as the Americans try and avoid an unthinkable defeat. Mickelson ruled himself out of the running to be captain in 2024, claiming golf’s split had led to him being too ‘divisive.’ “I’m a very divisive character right now, if you will, and I understand that,” he said on the Youtube sports talk show. “The players on the PGA Tour, there’s a lot of hostilities towards me, and I don’t feel I’d be the best leader for them. “I knew I was going to take some hits going forward, and I’m OK with that,”  he said on the Pat McAfee Show. “And as a divisive individual, I don’t think I’m the best unifier going forward for the Ryder Cup, and that’s fine because I’ve had so many great memories with it.” Keegan Bradley has been handed the honor.
