The Seattle Kraken are taking no chances with one of their top trade assets ahead of Friday’s NHL trade deadline.
Kraken forward Brandon Tanev will be held out of Thursday’s game against the Nashville Predators for trade protection reasons, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported.
Tanev, 33, has skated in 60 games for Seattle this season, recording nine goals and eight assists.
The 10-year NHL veteran can provide the kind of intensity teams crave in the playoffs as a depth winger who leads the Kraken in penalty-kill minutes per game.

Tanev, who was selected as part of the Kraken’s 2021 expansion draft, is due to become an unrestricted free agent after the season when the six-year, $21 million deal he signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2019 expires.
In 533 career games, Tanev has 83 goals and 92 assists.
Seattle has struggled for much of the season and sits well outside of the Western Conference playoff picture, which prompted them into sell mode. They shipped out Oliver Bjorkstrand and Yanni Gourde in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday.
