“Doctor Who” Just Dropped Multiple Reveals

What appeared to be a Eurovision-themed throwaway standalone episode of “Doctor Who” this week ended up having major implications for the remaining episodes of the season.

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “DOCTOR WHO” 15×06/2×06 – “INTERSTELLAR SONG CONTEST”

After hinting at her potential to return one day in several episodes of Ncuti Gatwa’s run last season, The Doctor’s granddaughter Susan Foreman finally appeared on screens here.

Actress Carole Ann Ford reprised her role 62 years later for a series of visions that The Doctor sees of a now elderly Susan standing in the present-day TARDIS. It’s expected she will play a larger role in the two remaining episodes of the current season.

Those episodes however will have a key new casting inclusion revealed here – former “The Good Wife” and “The Fall” actress Archie Panjabi who bigenerated from Anita Dobson’s Mrs. Flood to bring back a classic “Doctor Who” villain – The Rani.

The Rani’s return has long been fan speculated as happening one day and Panjabi is a solid casting choice as she was also floated as a potential candidate to play The Doctor in times past. Panjabi’s “The Fall” co-star Gillian Anderson was also rumored for The Rani at one point a few years ago.

In ‘Who’ lore, The Rani is a renegade Time Lord and ruthless scientist known for her radical experiments. Whereas The Master was the more traditional villain archetype bent on acquiring and flexing his power, The Rani was more of a wildcard – an amoral scientist pursuing scientific advancement no matter the cost.

Kate O’Mara played the role across two serialised stories in the original show and a charity TV special.
