Arsenal receive devastating Kai Havertz injury news

The Germany international had been a virtual ever-present over the course of the last two months which saw the Gunners play every three days, culminating in last week’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg defeat against Newcastle. Mikel Arteta’s first team squad jetted out last week for a warm weather break that was designed to help his overworked players regain peak fitness ahead of the run-in. Instead, Arsenal have returned to England with their ranks even more depleted than when they set off. News of the Havertz injury scare was first reported on Tuesday and the former Chelsea star underwent scans earlier today. According to The Athletic, it is unclear as to whether the Germany international will require surgery, but the club’s focus is already centering on ensuring the player is ready for the start of next season. Despite some erratic form in front of goal, Havertz has become a vital component in Mikel Arteta’s team, scoring 15 goals in all competitions this term. Ironically, Arteta praised the 25-year-old for his durability in the aftermath of Arsenal’s failure to sign attacking reinforcements in January. ‘He has played a lot of football but his robustness, his availability is unbelievable,’ Arteta said earlier this month when it was suggested Havertz might be feeling the strain. ‘When you ask him he feels better when he is playing every three days. Against Girona for example, we gave him a rest. And then he felt fresher. ‘He then had a very demanding game physically against Manchester City for the role that he had to do. We will see how they are. Asked about how he could utilise those players before the injuries sustained by Havertz and Martinelli, Arteta said: ‘We are going to have to be flexible in the front line, the ones we have we have to make sure they stay fit and are contributing, can play in that position. ‘Raheem (Sterling) has played in that position, Ethan (Nwaneri) I think can play in that position, (Gabriel) Martinelli, so lets see in relation to how everybody is in the moment, the opponent. ‘But at some point I think we will have to try something different.’
