Report: Warriors Guard Gary Payton II out indefinitely with thumb injury

The surging Golden State Warriors have suffered a major blow to their rotation.

Gary Payton II has sustained a torn ligament in his left thumb and will be out for an indefinite period, Shams Charania of ESPN reported on Thursday.

The injury occurred during the Warriors’ loss to the Miami Heat on Tuesday night.

The six-foot-two guard is averaging 6.6 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 14.9 minutes across 58 games this season, including 11 starts. Payton, 32, has seen both his minutes and scoring averages jump to 20.7 and 11.1, respectively, in the month of March.

The Warriors are 16-5 since acquiring Jimmy Butler prior to this season’s trade deadline and have jumped from 10th place to 7th place in the Western Conference standings.
