Trump: James Bond Won’t Be Hurt By Tariffs

Donald Trump has indicated the new James Bond movies won’t be impacted by his proposed film tariffs – and all due to the original actor who played him.

Last weekend, Trump posted on social media that the U.S. Trade Representative and the Commerce Department were considering imposing a 100% tariff on movies made outside of the United States.

In the wake of that, The White House issued a statement saying “no final decisions on foreign film tariffs have been made”. Confusion has reigned since then over just what will be done by the current administration.

One of Trump’s Hollywood ambassadors, Jon Voight, and his producing partner, Steven Paul revealed after the announcement they had submitted a comprehensive plan to rescue the entertainment industry.

Said plan included federal incentives for production and post-production, co-production a with foreign countries, infrastructure subsidies for theater owners, and a 120% tariff placed on a production if it “could have been produced in the U.S., but the producer elects to produce in a foreign country and receives a production tax incentive”.

At a press conference, Trump was asked by The London Times about the tariff plan where he said:

“We’re putting tariffs on… film, the moviemakers, and we’re going to be doing some tariffs to get them, because a lot of them have left this country. They all live here, the money comes from here, everything comes from here, but they make them in other countries. So, we’re gonna do something to bring them back, maybe to a large extent.

But James Bond has nothing to worry about, that I can tell you. And you know, Sean Connery was a friend of mine. Sean Connery was responsible for my getting zoning in Aberdeen. He said, ‘Let the bloody bloke build his golf courses.’ I was like four years into the process, and it was impossible in Aberdeen… He was a great guy, Sean Connery.”

The comments come in the wake of Amazon MGM Studios taking over full creative control of the franchise from producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli.
