As a result, Macclesfield will play in the National League North next season. For the former Wales international and football pundit, taking charge of the Silkmen marked his debut as a full-time manager. The ex-Leicester and Derby midfielder, who is a shareholder in Macclesfield, was director of football before taking charge of the first team last year. Savage helped his friend Robert Smethurst, the Silkmen Chairman, to relaunch the club after Macclesfield Town was wound up in 2020. Now, Savage has confirmed commitment to Macclesfield and signed a two-year deal. In reaction to the news, Smethurst said: “Absolutely thrilled to be able to keep hold of Robbie despite offers from numerous clubs, the journey continues.” Macclesfield’s success drew attention and Savage said back in March he had already turned down one job offer from a higher level. “It’s a club that’s close to my heart,” said Savage. “What myself and Rob and the volunteers, the staff have all achieved: three promotions in four years, an FA trophy semi-final, record-breaking season last year. Savage’s Silkmen amassed 109 points from 42 games “You know interest from other clubs, as Rob has alluded to, I just wanted to show everybody my commitment to this football club. “It’s my future. For the next couple of years, it’s going to be here. “It’s a project. It’s a journey. I can’t leave that dressing room. “The lads have been spectacular, been amazing. Togetherness has been incredible. So I’m on that journey with them.” Savage continued: “I just hope this goes to show that my commitment to the football club is there. “I can’t leave, what we’ve been through together has been amazing.” Savage took over at Macclesfield from Michael Clegg after the Silkmen lost the play-off final. The former Premier League star was ready to walk away if the side missed out on promotion for a second successive campaign. “If we had failed I would have left the football club and given up my shareholding because I couldn’t have come back,” said Savage. “So everything was on the line.”
