Suge Knight Reaches $1.5 Million Settlement in 2015 Wrongful Death Lawsuit: Report

Suge Knight has avoided a retrial in his 2015 wrongful death civil case by reaching a settlement for $1.5 million with the plaintiffs, according to Rolling Stone.

The suit was filed by the two daughters and wife of Terry Carter, the Compton entrepreneur whom Knight ran over with a truck in January 2015 in the parking lot of a Los Angeles burger joint following an argument on the set of the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton.

The former Death Row boss appeared virtually in court from a San Diego prison on Tuesday (April 29) and verbally agreed to the settlement while Carter’s widow, Lillian, and daughters Nekaya and Crystal were present. Each of the three plaintiffs will reportedly receive $500,000.

“Terry was a friend of mine. It definitely wasn’t done intentionally. It wasn’t done to bring harm to him,” Knight told Rolling Stone. “One of the reasons I settled [is] I got respect for Terry, so that means I’ve got respect for his family. … I didn’t want to put the family through more pain. It’s not that I did anything wrong. I never would have. But I do owe the family an apology because of this thing they had to go through.”

Knight was tried in 2022 in the wrongful death case before it ended in a mistrial. A jury was reportedly split seven to five in favor of the plaintiffs.

Knight maintains that he was avoiding an ambush and didn’t intentionally run Carter over with his Ford F-150 Raptor. He claims he originally planned to confront Dr. Dre on the Compton set after hearing that Dre had organized a murder-for-hire plot against him.

Cle “Bone” Sloan, who worked as an advisor on the Straight Outta Compton set, was also involved in the altercation and suffered serious ankle injuries as well as head trauma from Knight’s vehicle. Carter died within an hour of Knight fleeing the scene.

“I’m not happy with the outcome of it, at all, but I don’t want to give him another opportunity to put on a clown show and act like a b—-,” Lillian Carter said to Rolling Stone. “Maybe somebody will shank him in jail.”

Knight is currently serving a 28-year prison sentence after reaching a plea deal in the criminal case over Carter’s death.
