“Sisu” Director Set For “Rambo” Origin Film

Finnish Filmmaker Jalmari Helander (“Sisu,” “Rare Exports,” “Big Game”) has been set to direct an origin film about Sylvester Stallone’s iconic character John Rambo.

Millennium Media (“The Expendables,” “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” “Olympus Has Fallen”) has launched “John Rambo” at the Cannes market.

The title serves as a prequel to 1982’s acclaimed drama “First Blood” which first introduced the character – a veteran Green Beret who in that film is harassed by a cruel sheriff and his deputies in a small town to the point he flees into the mountains and wages an escalating one-man war.

Highly acclaimed, the film was followed up by multiple sequels which took a completely different approach – bombastic 80s action movies in which Rambo slaughters people by the hundreds (across five films his body count is said to be around 490).

While plot specifics of the origin tale are under wraps, the film is expected to follow a young John Rambo during the Vietnam War, with casting in early stages.

Stallone is reportedly aware of the project but is not currently involved., but the door is said to be open from producers should a fitting role arise. Kevin King-Templeton, Les Weldon, Jonathan Yunger and Avi Lerner produce.

Helander is set to direct from a screenplay by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani and shooting begins in October in Thailand.
