Report: Canada’s Jay Triano out as Kings assistant coach

As the Sacramento Kings make changes to their bench, a Canadian has found himself on the outs.

Lead assistant coach Jay Triano will not return to the team next season, The Athletic reported on Saturday.

Triano, 66, joined the Kings in August 2022 and spent three seasons with the organization, including the last two as lead assistant.

But Sacramento fired head coach Mike Brown in December and replaced him with assistant Doug Christie, who was handed the full-time gig earlier this week.

Jawad Williams and three other assistants are out along with Triano, while Leandro Barbosa will remain on the bench, The Athletic added.

Triano has coached in the NBA since joining the Toronto Raptors as an assistant in 2002. He’s had two stints as head coach with the Raptors (2008-11) and Phoenix Suns (2017-18).

The Tillsonburg, Ont., native was also Canada’s men’s national team head coach from 1998-2004, leading the team to the 2000 Olympics.
