Will Power’s season got off to a terrible start. Mixed up in someone else’s crash at St. Petersburg, the Australian opened his quest for a third championship in 26th place and then went on an epic recovery run to dig out of the giant points deficit he faced in the No. 12 Team Penske Chevy.
The rebound started with a stellar charge from 21st to sixth at The Thermal Club, followed by a fifth at Long Beach, another fifth at Barber Motorsports Park, and his first podium of the year—a third—at the Indianapolis Grand Prix.
Four straight top sixes turned that 26th-place after the first race into a handy seventh in the championship standings entering the Indy 500. He’s only nine points behind teammate Scott McLaughlin in fifth, and could be free of the deficit from St. Petersburg if the rest of the month goes according to plan.
“I would tell you we have had a fantastic last four races if one guy wasn’t winning them all,” Power said of Alex Palou. “It’s a good start to month and we are looking forward to the 500 now. I think Chevy will get its first win of the season there. We had very good strategy and a good car pace today. Things were well executed. Unfortunately, no passing for me at this track. I’m excited to get on the oval. It will be interesting to see how the car feels, and I think found some good stuff in the test.”
