Arguably one of the best hitters in college softball is about to hit the open market. On her Instagram earlier this week, Boise State’s Sophia Knight announced her intent to enter the transfer portal. The 5-foot-4 outfielder led all of Division I softball in hits this season with 103, which were both single season records for Boise State and the Mountain West Conference. Notably, Knight is the first player in Division I NCAA softball to reach 100 hits in a single season in 23 years. “After much prayer and reflection, I’ve made the incredibly difficult decision to enter the transfer portal. This season, she was named to the All-Mountain West First Team and D1Softball.com ranked her as the seventh-best outfielder in the sport. In addition to her hit total, Knight also ranks third nationally in batting average this season with a mark of .486. She also piled up 63 runs-scored, a program-record five triples, 27 stolen bases and an OPS of 1.080 as a sophomore. Boise State had a solid season with a 34-22 record, but fell in the Mountain West Tournament to Nevada and San Diego State. A product of Huntington Beach, California, Knight has 188 hits, 30 walks and just 36 strikeouts in 422 career at-bats. She also sports a .962 career fielding percentage. Knight enters the portal with two years of eligibility remaining. According to Softball America at On3, 23 players have entered the sport’s transfer portal as of Saturday, May 17.
