Newcastle United vs Brentford predictions

After two and a half weeks of joyous celebration, it is time for Newcastle United to get down to business again.

On March 16, the Magpies finally ended their 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy. That was an extraordinary drought for a club of Newcastle’s size, and many of their fans must have wondered whether they would ever see their side get their hands on a piece of silverware.

Newcastle’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the EFL Cup final was marked with an open-top bus parade in the city over the weekend.

It was a fantastic occasion for everyone associated with the club, but Newcastle cannot afford to dwell on their memorable Wembley triumph for long.

There is still more for Eddie Howe’s side to achieve this season. With 10 matches remaining (they have a game in hand on most of the division), Newcastle are sixth in the Premier League. A one-point deficit separates them from fifth, the final Champions League qualification berth.

The title race and relegation battle appear to be done and dusted, but the fight for Europe’s premier competition is enthralling. Liverpool and Arsenal are surely over the line, leaving Nottingham Forest, Chelsea, Manchester City, Newcastle, Brighton & Hove Albion, Aston Villa and Bournemouth to scrap over the three remaining spots.

Brentford are too far back to be involved in the top-five hunt, but qualification for the Europa League or the Conference League is still a realistic enough objective.

The European places will go down to at least seventh, with Brentford currently six points behind Brighton, the club that occupies that spot heading into the midweek matches.

“(European football) is a fantastic dream, that would be amazing,” Thomas Frank said a few weeks back when asked if he was thinking about leading Brentford into continental competition for the first time in their history. 

“[But] if we want to dream about these European spots, I think we probably need to show a little bit more consistency.”

It was an honest assessment from Frank, whose Brentford side are underdogs with the bookies to win Wednesday’s meeting with Newcastle.

Newcastle United and Brentford both have their eyes on Europe, so this should be an enjoyable watch.

Brentford or draw

In the early part of the season, Brentford were brilliant at home and dismal away. The reverse is now true.

In large part due to the fixture list, Brentford have not won on their own patch since December (a 4-2 victory over Newcastle, incidentally). However, they have triumphed in each of their last five matches on opposition soil.

That is one reason we fancy Frank’s charges to get something on Wednesday. Another is that Newcastle may struggle to get themselves up for a run-of-the-mill Premier League encounter after the euphoria of their EFL Cup success.

Howe’s team have lost three of their last four outings at St James’ Park if we include Brighton’s extra-time triumph in the EFL Cup.

Brentford can avoid defeat away to Newcastle, something they have done only once in their history.

Brentford have a useful habit of striking first on the road.

Frank’s men have taken the lead away from home on eight occasions this term, which puts them behind only Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Brighton and Crystal Palace.

That statistic looks even better if we focus on the last few months. Brentford have drawn first blood in four of their last five away games.

Newcastle, for their part, have been relatively sluggish out of the traps in their last few encounters at St James’ Park.

That was notably not the case against Liverpool at Wembley, but Newcastle could find themselves up against it in the opening exchanges here.

Alexander Isak is being linked with a move away from Newcastle as the summer approaches, but the club will do everything they can to retain their most prized asset.

Isak is enjoying a wonderful campaign as the line-leader for the Magpies. He has 23 goals to his name in all competitions, 19 of which have come in the top flight.

Only Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland have been more prolific – and Isak is just two goals behind the Manchester City man.

Anthony Gordon is a doubt for Wednesday’s clash with Brentford, so there will be even more responsibility on Isak to make the difference in the final third.
