Hurricanes’ Chatfield not expected to receive discipline for takedown of Capitals’ McMichael

It appears there won’t be any ramifications for Carolina Hurricanes defenceman Jalen Chatfield after his dangerous takedown of Washington Capitals forward Connor McMichael on Wednesday night.
Chatfield is not expected to receive any supplemental discipline from the NHL’s department of player safety after slamming McMichael to the ice during a fight, Sportsnet confirmed Thursday.
The news was first reported Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli.
The incident happened in the midst of a testy third period as Chatfield grabbed hold of McMichael’s jersey from the front and back to slam the helmet-less Capital to the ice.
McMichael was not injured and both received five-minute fighting majors penalties and 10-minute game misconducts.
The fight between McMichael and Chatfield was the conclusion of a seven-minute stretch that saw 120 penalty minutes awarded — 10 two-minute minors, four five-minute fighting majors and eight 10-minute misconducts.
The Hurricanes won 5-1.
After the game, Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery said he felt some questionable plays weren’t called by the officials.
“There were just a few plays before (the Chatfield takedown) that, you know … player safety is a big thing,” Carbery told reporters. “Guys are so good at policing each other on what’s dangerous or what’s not and there were a few dangerous plays that start to get… you can feel the temperature raising.
“There’s a couple subtle instances in that game, when the game is the score that it is, that’s where the refs, if they miss something, that’s where players start to police themselves and go, look, this went on here. I feel like player safety becomes an issue and obviously guys are going to stick up for one another.”

The Capitals have been involved in a few high-profile, high-penalty minute contests. In March, the Capitals and Seattle Kraken engaged in a line brawl where all 10 skaters on the ice received penalties.
The Capitals were on the other side of a controversial takedown when forward Tom Wilson took down New York Rangers forward Artemi Panarin late in the 2021 season and sparked an ongoing feud between the two teams. Wilson received a $5,000 fine for the preceding cross-check on Pavel Buchnevich, but otherwise no suspension.
The Hurricanes and Capitals face each other next on April 10, and the Metropolitan Division rivals could meet again in the playoffs.
