Look, I Love Broadway’s ‘Wicked,’ but the Ending Won’t Work in ‘Wicked: For Good’

The stage ending of Wicked may not exactly work as smoothly for Wicked: For Good, but for now, we'll have to hold out hope!

Look, I Love Broadway’s ‘Wicked,’ but the Ending Won’t Work in ‘Wicked: For Good’

To say I’m a fan of Wicked might be the understatement of the year. I first fell in love with the show more than 20 years ago, when I was introduced to Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth’s enchanting performances via the Original Cast Recording. Throughout my childhood, I collected Wicked merchandise and attended the show whenever I had the opportunity. So, I was, of course, thrilled when the first part of Jon M. Chu’s big screen adaptation finally debuted last year. After leaving an early screening of the film, I was absolutely thrilled with how the director, along with writer Winnie Holtzman and composer Stephen Schwartz, managed to adapt the story faithfully while still managing to add nuance and expand upon existing stories. However, as we prepare for the release of Wicked: For Good this holiday season, I’m hopeful that the film will make a major change to the stage show’s plot, specifically with its iconic ending.
