So far, the marketing behind Sony’s upcoming Anaconda has been a confusing one, signaling an adventure comedy that forgets the horror. But one of the film’s stars, Jack Black, has recently revealed that the new film hasn’t forgotten the scares after all.
Black stars alongside Paul Rudd (Death of a Unicorn) in Anaconda, arriving in theaters December 25, 2025.
“It’s a lot funnier than the original,” Black told EW, “but it does have a lot of the original vibes in terms of the scary parts. It’s a horror film for real, but it’s also got some clownin’ for sure.”
While the “clownin'” part of the equation has been evident from the beginning, it’s reassuring to hear the actor confirm that Anaconda will capture the original film’s tone and horror in some way. Just how much remains to be seen, of course, but the film is taking a meta approach.
In Anaconda’s big screen return, “a group of friends facing mid-life crises are remaking their favorite movie from their youth. They head to the rainforest, only to find themselves in a fight for their lives against natural disasters, giant snakes, and violent criminals.”
Black is set to play a director stuck in his job as a wedding videographer, and Rudd stars as an actor worried that his Hollywood dreams will evaporate. The actors are joined by Thandiwe Newton (“Westworld”), Steve Zahn (“Silo,” Joy Ride), Brazilian actor Selton Mello, Ione Skye (Say Anything, Haunt), and Daniela Melchior (James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, Road House).
Tom Gormican (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent) directs from a script co-written with collaborator Kevin Etten.
Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson, Ice Cube and Jon Voight starred in the original 1997 film that saw a documentary film crew held hostage by a deranged hunter as he seeks to hunt the world’s biggest and deadliest snake. The film’s success launched three sequels between 2004 and 2009. More recently, the Anaconda franchise battled the Lake Placid franchise in a 2015 crossover movie.
Here’s to hoping the marketing showcases the horror side of the Anaconda equation soon. Stay tuned.
