Bae Baracus – Escape to Freedom

Bae Baracus’s latest EP Escape to Freedom is a vibrant testament to the trio’s enduring creative alchemy, merging downtempo grooves with sharp-edged electronic pop. Released via Boomsmack Records, this four-track offering balances socio-political commentary, genre-defying production, and a punk heart pulsing beneath layers of synths and rhythmic innovation.

Opening track “Transgressive” sets the tone with a bold electro beat and defiant energy. A rallying cry for marginalized voices, it’s a stomping anthem driven by a bassline that punches forward with urgency. The rhythm here is tight and assertive, yet leaves room for playfulness—electro-punk attitude wrapped in shimmering layers. Dolly De Guerre’s vocal delivery is part snarl, part celebration, empowering and fierce. Synths flash like strobes in a dark club, weaving in and out of the track’s confrontational but danceable pulse. It’s a declaration, a mission statement, and a promise to dance through resistance.

Brink of Volition” shifts the pace dramatically, taking listeners into chillier terrain. With a rhythm that’s more measured and almost militaristic, the track unfolds like a frozen landscape cracking underfoot. The bassline here is sparser, providing depth rather than drive, while synths stretch out in eerie, ambient washes. It’s both haunting and introspective, a sonic exploration of personal agency under pressure. Gardiner’s production reveals its nuance here, layering atmosphere with subtle tension that never quite resolves, keeping the listener suspended.

Then comes “London Calling,” a bold reinterpretation of the Clash classic. Rather than simply covering the track, Bae Baracus reshape it into their own language—electronic textures replace punk guitars, but the urgency remains intact. The rhythm carries the song forward with a slow burn, making the message feel even more poignant in today’s fractured political climate. Clef Seeley’s instrumentation is particularly striking, creating a moody, elastic bed of synths and beats that cradle Dolly’s emotionally raw vocal. It’s a respectful homage that manages to feel both nostalgic and deeply contemporary.

The EP closes with “Wwise Words,” an impromptu dancefloor experiment that lands somewhere between slinky electro and cosmic lounge. With a bassline that grooves in slow motion and synths that flicker like neon reflections, it captures the strange alchemy of spontaneity. The rhythm here is understated but infectious, giving just enough movement to nod along while soaking in the track’s seductive atmosphere. It’s a song that speaks to missed connections and half-spoken thoughts, arriving at clarity just in time to let it slip away.

Throughout Escape to Freedom, Bae Baracus continue to refine their unique sonic identity. Lin Gardiner’s production is both polished and raw, giving each track a distinct atmosphere while maintaining cohesion. Seeley’s multi-instrumental work adds texture and depth, and De Guerre’s lyrical sharpness and charismatic delivery tie it all together. The result is a release that feels personal yet universal, playful yet charged with meaning.

With this EP, Bae Baracus invite us to dance at the edge of dystopia, find strength in strange synths, and embrace the freedom of self-expression—no matter how chaotic the world becomes. We’re thrilled to host Escape to Freedom on our webzine.
