Islanders’ Roy blasts Duclair after loss to Lightning: ‘God-awful’

It’s safe to say that New York Islanders forward Anthony Duclair is going to have to work himself out of his coach’s dog house.

After Tuesday’s 4-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, Islanders head coach Patrick Roy didn’t mince words when asked about the veteran forward’s performance.

“He was god-awful. He was god-awful. He had a bad game,” Roy said, per ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski. “That’s why I didn’t play him a lot. And he’s lucky to be in the lineup. Sorry if I lose it on him right now, but that’s how I feel.”

Duclair played just four shifts in the third period of Tuesday’s game and finished with 12:15 of total ice time. He was a minus-1 with zero points.

When asked what he believes to be the cause of Duclair’s struggles, Roy said he thinks it’s an “effort thing.”

“He’s not skating, he’s not competing, he’s not moving his feet. He’s not playing up to what we expect from him,” Roy said

Duclair, 29, signed a four-year, $14 million contract with the Islanders in the off-season and has a full no-move clause through 2026.

In his first season in New York, Duclair has recorded just seven goals and four assists in 44 games. He missed the beginning of the season with a lower-body injury and has struggled to get back on track since returning.

Duclair is far from the Islanders’ only problem, however. Tuesday’s loss to the Lightning was their sixth straight, and they now sit five points back of the Montreal Canadiens for the East’s final wild-card spot.

With just eight games remaining, it seems the Islanders and Duclair will have to pull off something pretty special to get back in their coach’s good books.
