‘I expect him to be back’ – Eddie Hearn explains why Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury is now easier to make
Promoter Eddie Hearn is confident Tyson Fury will make a return to the ring. And he hopes ‘The Gypsy King’ will favour a blockbuster clash with his fighter, Anthony Joshua, in that scenario. Fury was defeated twice by Oleksandr Usyk in epic bouts last yearGetty Joshua was knocked out by Daniel Dubois in his last fight at Wembley last SeptemberGetty British sports promoter and Chairman of Matchroom Boxing Hearn is currently in New York to assist Ring Magazine with their massive Times Square card on Friday night that is headlined by Ryan Garcia vs Rolando Romero. He joined talkSPORT’s Drive with Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent on Thursday to preview the card, and discuss the potential return of Fury. Fury retired from boxing in January after suffering his second consecutive defeat to Oleksandr Usyk one month prior. However, on Monday, he hinted at a dramatic return to the ring when he posted a video alongside long-time trainer SugarHill Steward. “Just in the gym,” he said. “I just bumped into somebody you might know. You know what is coming.” Hearn hopes these comments will lead to a huge fight against ‘AJ,’ but insisted there’s only one man who can make it happen. “Tyson’s got a history of teasing a few bits and pieces when boxing’s hot,” he explained live on talkSPORT. “He would have watched [Chris] Eubank Jr vs [Conor] Benn on Saturday, and must have just thought to himself, ‘I could be involved in something bigger.’ “It would be even bigger, which is hard to fathom, and then of course [Daniel] Dubois vs Usyk gets announced. “Tyson’s a competitor, he’s still got plenty left in the tank and I expect him to be back. Hearn said Fury vs AJ can be easily made as both guys are in a similar positionGetty “We just hope that’s for an Anthony Joshua fight, but I guess that’s down to him.” Fury vs Joshua has been talked about in the boxing world for over 10 years, and Hearn believes the fight would be easier to put together in today’s context, if the Gypsy King did come out of retirement. “I do [think it can be easily made],” he added. “In the past, it’s always been: one’s a champion, one’s a challenger. “Now, both guys are in a similar position: they’re coming off a defeat… Fury two defeats, both to Oleksandr Usyk. “They’re both still pretty much in their prime, and as we saw last Saturday, sometimes you don’t need the world championship belt. “Sometimes when you’ve got two champions trying to become undisputed it’s a little bit cagey. Hearn believes Fury vs AJ is easier to make as both are coming off defeats “Benn vs Eubank Jr was just a great example of two guys that just went to war, and that’s exactly what you’d get with AJ against Fury.” Hearn concluded by asserting Wembley Stadium would be the only place to hold a fight with the magnitude of Fury vs Joshua. He revealed no conversations with Fury’s team about dates or terms have taken place, but asserted it could be as simple as ‘a DM’ from Fury to Joshua asking the latter if he wants to do it. Fury suffered two unanimous decision defeats against Usyk in Saudi Arabia last year after beating Dillian Whyte, Derek Chisora, and Francis Ngannou off the back of his Deontay Wilder trilogy. Joshua, meanwhile, knocked out Ngannou in 2024 after the Cameroonian came close to beating Fury, before he was floored himself by Dubois at Wembley in September. Fury’s video came on the same day that Usyk and Dubois clashed in the talkSPORT studios over the contentious low blow in their inaugural encounter ahead of their undisputed showdown on July 19.
