Jason Lei Howden‘s Deathgasm is about to get some love in the form of a video game adaptation, but also an all-new graphic novel. Per Fangoria, the heavy metal horror-comedy will be getting a retro-style 16-bit sidescroller for PlayStation 5, as well as an 80-page graphic novel that will serve as a prelude to the long-awaited upcoming sequel, Deathgasm 2: Goremageddon.
Bit Bot, Howden’s Metalheads Inc., and FreakZone Games will be teaming up to develop Deathgasm: The Video Game, which will be available in both digital and physical formats. The game will centre around the Black Hymn having been unleashed, and as a result, Hell is bleeding into reality. Players can choose from Brodie, Zakk, or Medina to fight through nine levels, each inspired by Dante’s Inferno, and full of demonic horrors and “gloriously obscene humour.” You’ll have at you disposal chainsaws, axes, guitars, sex toys, and more to beat down the hordes of the damned, ultimately facing off against monstrous bosses based on the original film’s villains.
Howden and Bit Bot are also working on the graphic novel, Deathgasm 1.5: Director’s Cut, which will feature brief cameos from GWAR and Trivium’s Matt Heafy. The novel will be written by Peter Bune (Squatch Watch), with art by Industrias Lamonicana (Fierro).
“Between the events of Deathgasm 1 and Deathgasm 2 was a story that I needed to tell […] The story was so visually epic, so gory, and so offensive that it could never be filmed without watering it down,” explains Howden to Fangoria. “Instead, we made it into a graphic novel: Deathgasm 1.5. We’re stoked for fans to witness Brodie and Medina slashing demons and thrashing metal riffs, meeting old mates and an ageless evil that lurks in the shadows of a heavy metal-hating church!”
Both projects will be having a Kickstarter campaign launch in the near future.
Meanwhile, Deathgasm 2: Goremageddon is in post-production after its own Kickstarter campaign resulted in success. No release date has been announced as of yet.
