“The Fall Guy” and “Bullet Train” director David Leitch is in negotiations to helm the big-budget live-action “Gears of War” movie at Netflix.
“Dune” scribe Jon Spaihts is writing the script for the adaptation that will see streaming giant Netflix teaming with the game’s Canadian developer The Coalition Studio.
Netflix snagged the rights to the franchise in November 2022 with the plan being to first adapt the games as a feature, then follow it up with an adult animated series. Should they be a success, more will follow.
Set on the planet Sera, the game thrusts players into a battle for survival between humans and a race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the planet known as the Locust Horde. Players assume identities of soldiers on Delta Squad as they fight to save Sera’s inhabitants.
Leitch and wife/producing partner Kelly McCormick will produce the film via their 87North production label. He is currently prepping “How to Rob a Bank” starring Nic Hoult and Anna Sawai.
The various games in the ‘Gears’ series have sold well over 40 million copies since the franchise’s 2006 debut and was considered one of Microsoft’s three biggest Xbox exclusive franchises alongside “Halo” and “Forza” – at least until “Forza” just made its debut on Sony’s PS5 with the first ‘Gears’ game coming later this year.
