Marvel Studios was famously several episodes into production on “Daredevil: Born Again” when the strikes halted the series.
Upon reviewing what was done, Marvel made a bold decision – to retool the entire series then and there. The former showrunners were let go, new showrunner Dario Scardapane (“The Punisher”) came in and several past cast members from the Netflix series came with him.
The general consensus seems to be that the original plan for the series was to avoid the question of whether this was a direct continuation of the original Netflix show – not unlike when Charlie Cox’s Daredevil showed up on “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law”.
Once retooled it became heavily tied to the original series, with many cast members returning and some plot points picked up. Cox tells EW the original show’s plan was too wishy-washy:
“Not that it didn’t work, but it was a little bit confusing. It was too, ‘Is it the show or is it not the show?'”
Marvel TV chief Brad Winderbaum spoke of that initial incarnation of the new show, saying:
“It led to a feeling of, maybe we don’t have to define it. Maybe we can play it loose. It really wasn’t clear until we watched the series after the strike that we had to choose.”
Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, Ayelet Zurer as Vanessa Fisk, and Wilson Bethel as Benjamin Poindexter/Bullseye all returned in the retooled version after being left out of the earlier incarnation.
Vincent D’Onofrio, Margarita Levieva, Zabryna Guevara, Nikki James, Genneya Walton, Arty Froushan, Clark Johnson, Michael Gandolfini and Jon Bernthal also star
“Daredevil: Born Again” has its debut on Disney+ on March 4th.
