Chelsea vs Liverpool predictions

Liverpool have done it. For a record-equalling 20th time, the Reds are the champions of England.

They got over the line thanks to an emphatic 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend. It was a performance that underlined their excellence throughout 2024/25.

There is no doubt that Liverpool are worthy champions. It is true that Arsenal and Manchester City have both fallen short of expectations, but nothing should be taken away from Arne Slot’s side.

Liverpool have sat at the summit of the standings ever since a 2-1 defeat of Brighton & Hove Albion at the beginning of November. They lead the way not only on points, but also on goals scored, expected goals for, expected goals against, goal difference, wins and plenty more besides.

Their accomplishment is particularly impressive given this is Slot’s debut campaign as Liverpool boss, and his first working outside his native Netherlands.

Hardly anyone tipped Liverpool to win the title when his appointment was confirmed last summer. The fact the club did not sign a single first-team regular (Federico Chiesa has barely featured) did not exactly increase optimism levels at Anfield.

Enzo Maresca is also in his first season at Chelsea. The jury remains out on the Italian, whose patient, possession-focused style of play has frustrated many of the club’s supporters.

Yet if Maresca goes on to lead Chelsea to Champions League qualification and victory in the Conference League, that would be a pretty decent outcome for the season.

A few weeks back it looked like Chelsea were only moving in one direction; namely, down the Premier League table. But they have now lost just one of their last eight top-flight encounters, as well as taking 13 points from the last 15 available at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea still have little margin for error. They are fifth at present, but their lead over Nottingham Forest is on goal difference alone. There is still plenty of work to do before the Blues can celebrate Champions League qualification.

Chelsea could really do with another victory when they take on Liverpool this weekend.

But given they wrapped up the title last weekend (and no doubt indulged in celebrations for at least a couple of days after), Liverpool’s display in the capital may lack its usual intensity.

True, Chelsea were in Conference League action on Thursday night, so Liverpool have had more rest in between fixtures.

But Maresca’s men have something meaningful to play for and their opponents do not. That could make all the difference.

Although we like Chelsea’s chances of emerging victorious in this one, this selection acts as something like a bet-hedger.

If Liverpool go on to collect all three points in west London, Salah will probably have been instrumental to their success. If the Reds are beaten, the Egypt international may well have his say anyway.

Salah famously failed to make the grade at Chelsea before establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s greatest ever players at Liverpool.

His debut campaign at Anfield yielded 32 league goals and Salah needs four more strikes to equal his personal record this term.

Do not be surprised if he edges closer to that number against his former employers.

Moises Caicedo anytime card

Liverpool wanted to sign Moises Caicedo back in the summer of 2023, but the then-Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder chose Chelsea instead.

Caicedo has been a near-permanent fixture in Maresca’s side this season, starting all 34 Premier League games and completing all but five of them.

He has also appeared regularly in the referee’s notebook, demonstrating a willingness to halt opponents by foul means or fouler.

If Romeo Lavia is selected to play in midfield, Caicedo could end up at right-back against Liverpool.

Wherever he plays, the Ecuador international will be sure to get stuck in. Only Sasa Lukic and Will Hughes have received more Premier League yellow cards this term.
