‘Cheers’-‘Frasier’ crossover project could still happen, says Kelsey Grammer

Kelsey Grammer is hoping for a season three of the Frasier revival despite its cancellation, and suggests that a crossover project with Cheers could still happen.
Frasier’s original run was from 1993 to 2004, and focused on Grammer’s character Frasier Crane, who first appeared as a supporting character in Cheers. It returned in 2023 and ran for two seasons before Paramount+ announced its cancellation in January.
Grammer told the New York Post on March 6 that he’s been speaking to Ted Danson, who played lead character Sam Malone in Cheers, about working together on a crossover project.
“Ted and I might actually visit something together, we’ve been talking about it,” he said. “A couple ideas, maybe on Frasier. We don’t know, but there is still certainly something, some fields to be mined there, in terms of that relationship, as long as it’s still a relevant relationship it’s still relevant for the show.”
After Cheers finished in 1993, Grammer and Danson went for three decades without speaking, Grammer explaining earlier this year (via the New York Post), “It got a little blown out of proportion. There really wasn’t an argument. It was at a time in my life when I was actually going through a lot of self-doubt, self-loathing, honestly. It was when I was drinking a lot.
“Maybe what happened for Ted was, he stepped away from what might have been a better friendship. Maybe he had to protect himself.”
However, they’re now on friendly terms again, three decades after Danson originally guest-starred as Malone in a season two episode of Frasier. So, if there is a crossover, their respective characters may have to discuss the three decades in between.
While the cancellation might be making things more difficult for Grammer and Danson, Grammer’s hoping to find a new network for the show. “There’s a better home for it … I mean, obviously, they didn’t really promote or spend much time on it,” he said. “We’ll end up somewhere where people are passionate about it. … Listen, it’s got a huge audience, a big following, and if people know where to find it, I think they will.”
In a four-star review of the revival, NME wrote, “Bringing beloved comedies back can be fraught with danger, a shallow and sentimental wallow, but the creators of Frasier know exactly what made the show great. Premiering on Paramount+, Frasier 2.0 is well worth raising a glass to.”
Cheers, meanwhile, won’t be returning. Grammer explained, “Cheers will not come back, [co-creator] Jimmy Burrows has always said, ‘No, that bar doesn’t exist anymore.’”
Grammer, meanwhile, has also said that he’d “like to see Diane come back,” referring to the waitress played by Shelley Long in Cheers. The character dates both Crane and Malone over the show’s run.
