(NewsNation) — About 39.4 million Americans are expected to drive this Memorial Day weekend, up 3.1% from last year and the most in 20 years, according to a new report from AAA.

Driving is usually the preferred mode of transportation during holiday travel periods, with 87% of Memorial Day travelers opting for road trips. Gas prices are also expected to be lower this year compared to last, with AAA data showing prices being 50 cents cheaper per gallon.

AAA also projects 3.61 million people will be flying over the holiday weekend, which is a nearly 2% increase from 3.55 million travelers in 2024. Booking data shows domestic flights are 2% more expensive from last year, with the cost of an average round trip ticket being $850.

In addition to rising airline prices, travelers have also been left feeling uncertain about air travel due to recent incidents with air traffic control issues. At Newark Liberty International Airport, equipment outages led to flight delays and cancellations for many people.

According to AAA, some of the top travel destinations this Memorial Day include Orlando, Denver and Seattle.
