Though he's only made a handful of films, Ryan Coogler has already demonstrated a knack for writing great villains, as Black Panther and Sinners show.
Ryan Coogler is, as of 2025, still relatively new on the scene, so to speak. His first feature film, Fruitvale Station, came out in 2013, but was an instant hit for a movie of its scale. That is to say that it was a small film, and a challenging one, but it instantly solidified Coogler as someone to keep an eye on. By 2015, he proved able to handle mid-budget fare, and then a few years later, he directed something on a much grander scale with his first superhero movie. Throughout all these films, regardless of the scope or prominent genre, is a sense of compelling drama, and often – as is the case with so many stories – a great villain is the one driving much of the drama.
