Activists Are Calling It the “New American Censorship System,” but What Does the Netflix and Disney-Backed Anti-Piracy Bill Actually Mean for You?

Censorship in film has always been a sensitive subject. Beginning with the infamous Hays Code, the idea of controlling the content within a movie, as well as what films could be seen overall has always sparked controversy as well as varying opinions. While the Hays Code itself was dismantled decades ago, further censorship efforts have continued throughout the years. The Foreign Anti-Digital Piracy Act (FADPA) was brought to the table as a way to combat piracy and has received support from some of the largest companies in Hollywood; however, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has slammed the bill for what it insinuates are ineffective measures, and the potentially dangerous effects it has on U.S. censorship. Collider is here to make sense of the bill as well as dig into the concerns the EFF has stated.
