UFC Cage Locks: Ex-champ Leon Edwards returns vs. surging Sean Brady

The UFC is back in London for the first time in two years and fight fans are in for a treat with a Fight Night card featuring a pair of former UFC champions.

UFC London takes place at The O2 Arena in England on Saturday with a welterweight bout between Leon Edwards and Sean Brady headlining the action, plus a co-main event featuring Jan Blachowicz vs. Carlos Ulberg.

Edwards has not fought since losing his title to current 170-pound champ Belal Muhammad at UFC 304, which took place in Manchester, England. The 33-year-old former champ was originally scheduled to face Jack Della Maddelena at this event, however Brady was tabbed as a replacement opponent when Della Maddelena was put into a title fight with Muhammad at the upcoming UFC 315 in Montreal.

Brady is 17-1 in pro MMA with his only loss being to Muhammad in 2022. The 32-year-old powerhouse known for his grappling prowess is coming off back-to-back wins over past UFC title challengers Kelvin Gastelum and Gilbert Burns.

Blachowicz returns for the first time in nearly two years when he looks to end Ulberg’s seven-fight winning streak. The former 205-pound champion’s two most recent opponents were former champ Alex Pereira (three-round split decision loss in July 2023) and new current champ Magomed Ankalaev (five-round majority draw in December 2022) but the Polish star is now 42 and hasn’t fought since undergoing multiple shoulder surgeries.

Ahead of each UFC event in 2025, UFC reporter Aaron Bronsteter (@aaronbronsteter), producer Dan Fernandes (@DanFernandes__) and writer/editor Mike Johnston (@MikeyJ_MMA) will peruse the odds and make four betting predictions: one best bet, one favourite, one underdog and one dart throw wager. REMINDER: Sportsnet is committed to promoting and educating audiences about the importance of betting responsibly. AARON’S PICKS
Best bet: Guram Kutateladze -430
Favourite: Mick Parkin -115
Underdog: Leon Edwards +135
Dart throw: Jan Blachowicz by decision +450

Kutateladze has been a bit flaky, but I think that he outmatches Fernandes in just about every area and I’m very confident that he gets the win. … Parkin trains daily with interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall, who raves about his continued development. While Tybura is a difficult puzzle to solve, I think that Parkin’s boxing will be a problem for him. … I think the world of Sean Brady, but I cannot discount Edwards being one fight removed from an eight-year unbeaten streak, while still in his prime years and fighting in prime time on his home soil. I would likely take him as an underdog under those circumstances against anyone in the division. … Finally, if Blachowicz still has something left in the tank, I think that his well-roundedness will cause problems for Carlos Ulberg.

DAN’S PICKS
Best bet: Christian Leroy Duncan -550
Favourite: Carlos Ulberg -300
Underdog: Leon Edwards +135
Dart throw: Molly McCann inside the distance +450

Ulberg is a star in the making who is battle ready. There are too many question marks for me surrounding Blachowicz and what type of shape he will be in on Saturday. A year is a long time to be away from competition and following two shoulder surgeries I don’t think we will be seeing vintage Jan just yet. … Has the gambling world forgotten who Leon Edwards is? I can’t believe he is the underdog here. I’m not saying Brady can’t win this fight, but Edwards was so dominant for so long and losing one bout to Belal Muhammad by decision doesn’t change much in terms of his ability. … The U.K. crowd will be going insane for “Meatball” Molly in London. She is always a KO threat but has won by submission recently as well. Well worth a punt here in my opinion.

MIKE’S PICKS
Best bet: Nelson vs. Holland ends inside distance -238
Favourite: Mick Parkin -115
Underdog: Felipe dos Santos +260
Dart throw: Leon Edwards by split or majority decision +800

Nearly hit a point deduction prop at 20/1 odds last weekend but Herb Dean decided to keep giving verbal warnings instead of enforcing the rules. Dang. One day soon we will get on the board. UFC London is a solid card top to bottom. The heavyweight division could use some fresh contenders closer to age 30 rather than 40 and Mick Parkin is part of that new wave of talent. I’ve been a believer in the big Brit for a couple years now and although his strength of schedule is paltry compared to Marcin Tybura’s, Parkin’s skill set is impressive and he’s ready to pick up the biggest win of his UFC career in front of the home crowd. He can keep this fight on the feet and if he does, he’ll outclass his respected opponent en route to an 11-0 pro record. … Lone’er Kavanagh is a great flyweight prospect but so is Dos Santos who is undervalued here in my opinion. … Nelson vs. Holland is such a weird one but I see it ending either with Nelson getting the sub or Holland getting a finish opposed to Nelson grinding out a decision win via control time.
