Trump approval rating slips to 41 percent after almost 100 days in office: CNN poll

President Trump’s approval rating slipped to 41 percent in the latest CNN poll, conducted just ahead of the 100-day benchmark of the president’s second term.

In the mid-April poll, released Sunday, 41 percent of respondents say they approve of the job Trump is doing as president, while 59 percent disapprove. That’s down four points from March, when 45 percent approved, and 54 percent disapproved. In late February, Trump had a 48 percent approval rating with 52 percent disapproving.

The approval rating is now below where Trump stood at this point in his first term, and also shows a steady decline.

At this point in the president’s first term, there had been little change in his approval rating, according to CNN polling: 44 percent approved of Trump in early February 2017, 45 percent approved in March 2017, and 44 percent approved in April 2017.

The first 100 days in office is generally seen as a grace period for the newly-elected president to make good on his campaign promises and lean on the trust from the American people that placed him in the Oval Office.

Trump’s approval rating during his first term, however, dipped below the 41 percent approval he enjoys now. When he left office following the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, a record-low 34 percent approved of his job as president.

Still, even at the end of Trump’s first term, 53 percent of Americans said they approved of the way Trump handled the economy during his term.

Today, only 39 percent say they approve of his handling of the economy, while 61 percent disapprove. That rating marks Trump lowest economic approval ever recorded by CNN. Last month, 44 percent approved of his handling of the economy.

Throughout Trump’s first term, his lowest rating on the economy was 44 percent — a level recorded in just one poll, in December 2017.

According to the recent CNN poll, Trump is seeing his approval ratings decline among certain demographic groups.

Since March, Trump’s approval rating among independent voters declined from 35 percent to 31 percent today. His approval rating since March also took a seven-point dive among women — 36 percent now approve, down from 44 percent in March — and among Hispanic voters — 28 percent now say they approve of the job he’s doing, down from 35 percent in March.

The Hill has reached out to the White House for comment.

The poll is consistent with several other polls recently showing Trump’s declining support, in particular on the economy.

The CNN poll — conducted by SSRS on April 17-24, 2025— included 1,678 respondents and had a margin of error of 2.9 percentage points.
