It was the first professional meeting between the pair, with the 23-year-old coming out on top. She had to recover from a break down in the deciding set before saving five break points at 4-4. Osaka had also lead 4-2 during the tiebreak only for Stearns to come from behind once again. The win sees the world number 42 into the second WTA 1000 quarter-final of her career and her first on clay. She will face either Elina Svitolina or Danielle Collins in the last eight on Tuesday. Speaking on-court after the match, she explained: “I think in the tiebreak I was just trying not to throw up in the middle of the court. Alongside partner Daria Kasatkina, the pair are set to face top seeds Erin Routliffe and Gabriela Dabrowski in the last 16. Their match will be Stearns’ sixth in six days in the Italian capital across both the singles and doubles. This year’s tournament marks her first appearance at the Italian Open. However, Stearns is already a winner on the WTA Tour after winning the 2024 Rabat Grand Prix in Morocco.
