Sonic Youth selling rare guitars, pedals, & other gear

Sonic Youth are once again parting with gear from throughout their history in their official Reverb shop.

In a new video, Lee Ranaldo shows off some of the gear, including:

* His first-ever electric guitar that he used in his first band The Fluks

* A Mu-Tron Bi-Phase effects pedal that Lee used on Sonic Youth’s ’90s records

* One of Lee’s “highly-used” signature Fender Jazzblasters

* A Foxx Tone Machine pedal that Sonic Youth used in their early days

* A Russian flanger pedal that was given to Lee from a fan in Russia

* An electronic tabla and tanpura unit that Lee purchased in New Dehli from Rikhi Ram, which Lee points out is the same store The Beatles shopped for their sitars

* An acoustic Taylor 314ce that Lee used throughout Sonic Youth’s career and the violin/cello bow that Lee used with it

* A Ludwig Phase II Synthesizer that Lee calls “the sound of ‘The Diamond Sea'” from Sonic Youth’s Washing Machine

* An electro autoharp that Lee played in Sonic Youth’s early days

* A mini Fender Stratocaster with a built-in speaker that Lee glitterized on tour and that he used during endings of “The Diamond Sea” at shows

* Two stamp pads that Lee would use when writing songs to impress an image of the guitar neck on his notebook so that he could write down “the strange chords that we would come up with for each different tuning”

* A pair of Urei Studio Monitors that were in the old Knitting Factory on Leonard Street before being gifted to Sonic Youth for their Echo Canyon space

* A parametric equalizer built by the bassist of Lee’s band The Fluks that Lee then used on Sonic Youth’s Confusion Is Sex record “and maybe some other stuff around that time”

* An 11-string Gretsch acoustic guitar that Lee says he’s used on “a bunch of different things,” including his 2017 solo album Electric Trim

Lee has all kinds of interesting things to say about each item, so I highly recommend watching the video to see him show off and discuss each one. And these items can be yours if you head to Sonic Youth’s Reverb shop.
