SL Benfica vs AS Monaco predictions

Benfica won the first leg 1-0 at the Stade Louis II stadium on Wednesday. Vangelis Pavlidis scored the only goal of the match, putting Bruno Lage’s team in the driving seat as they seek to reach the Round of 16.

The Eagles had a crazy qualifying campaign to get to this stage. Bruno Lage’s team finished 16th in the group table with 13 points. But that doesn’t really tell the whole story. 

There were highs like the 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid on Matchday 2, along with some lows like the 3-1 home defeat to Feyenoord and the 0-0 home draw with Bologna.  

Lage’s team also lost 5-4 to Barcelona on Matchday 7, throwing away a 4-2 lead. But with elimination on the cards, Benfica pulled off the ultimate heist by beating Juventus 2-0 in Turin on Matchday 8.

The Eagles sit second in the Primeira Liga with 50 points from 22 matches. They defeated Santa Clara 1-0 on Saturday, Bruma scored the only goal of the fixture. The win was Benfica’s third in succession in the Primeira Liga and fifth in a row in all competitions. 

Adi Hütter’s Monaco finished 17th in the Champions League group table with 13 points. Les Monégasque’s home form was their main strength. They won three from four at the Stade Louis II in the group stages.

The wins came against Barcelona, Red Star Belgrade and Aston Villa. Ironically, the one game they lost at home was to Benfica.

Hütter’s team picked up four points from their four away trips. A 2-2 draw with Dinamo Zagreb and a 1-0 win at Bologna were all that the Red and Whites had to shout about.

And it’s not just in Europe that Monaco has been poor away from home, the same applies in Ligue 1. Les Monégasque has won only four out of ten domestically. They have lost four and drawn two. 

Despite their struggles on the road, Monaco sit fourth in Ligue 1 with 40 points from 22 matches. 

A four-match winless run ended with a 3-2 win over Rennes on Matchday 19. That was the catalyst for an improved run of league form that has seen Hütter’s team claim nine points from their last four matches

Les Monegasques warmed up for the match against Benfica in some style on Saturday. Mika Biereth was the star of the show with a hat-trick as he helped his team thrash Nantes 7-1 in what was Monaco’s best result of the season.

Benfica has won ten and lost one of their 11 Primeira Liga home matches this season. In the Champions League, the Portuguese outfit won just one from four; the 4-0 drubbing of Atletico.

The caveat is that the majority of Benfica’s poor home form in the Champions League took place when the team was struggling earlier in the season.

Monaco has been awful on the road. In Ligue 1, they have lost four out of ten, with no win in their last five away trips. They weren’t much better in the Champions League, losing two from four on their travels.

Both teams have improved their domestic form in recent weeks. But with Benfica having home advantage, they have to be the pick to win on the night.

Along with Arthur Cabral and Zeki Amdouni, Vangelis Pavlidis scored in Benfica’s 3-2 win over Monaco on Matchday 5 in the group stage. 

The Greek scoring machine also scored the only goal of the match when the two teams met in the first leg last Wednesday.  

Pavlidis has scored eight goals and provided two assists in his last seven matches in all competitions. 

The in-form striker scored in five of those matches, starting on the bench in the two fixtures where he failed to find the net.

Pavlidis won for us last week at 23/20. We have to stick with him to be involved in a goal again this week.

Apologies to any Arsenal fans reading who might be annoyed with the club not bringing in a striker during the January transfer window. 

One striker who did make a big-money January transfer is former Arsenal youth product Mika Biereth.

After a successful loan period at Sturm Graz, the Austrians purchased Biereth for £4 million in the summer of 2024. 

Biereth scored 11 goals in 16 league games for the Austrians, who sold him to Monaco in the January transfer window for a reported €13 million, marking a huge return on their investment in just six months.

Biereth has already scored seven goals for Les Monegasques in just five matches. This includes two hat-tricks, the last of which came in the 7-1 demolition of Nantes on Saturday. 

Biereth also scored twice in his six Champions League matches for Graz in the first half of the season. 

In this sort of form, a bet on Biereth scoring at 11/5 is a must.
