Real Madrid knew they would not be La Liga champions before the midweek round of fixtures, but it is now impossible for them to finish above Barcelona.

Madrid did at least hold up their end of the bargain on Wednesday, running out 2-1 winners against Real Mallorca to remain in mathematical contention.

Barcelona were almost crowned title winners without playing. Madrid had to win to keep their hopes alive, but they did not score the decisive third goal of the game until the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time.

Jacobo Ramon was the surprise matchwinner, completing Madrid’s comeback from a goal down. It was only the academy graduate’s second league appearance for the club, and it was the first time he had found the net for the Blancos.

“The team played very well. They fought a lot, played with a lot of intensity and it was a totally deserved victory,” said Carlo Ancelotti after the match.

“We are happy because we want to finish the season well. This game didn’t start well but afterwards we did very well in all senses.”

Madrid set higher standards than virtually any other club in the world, so a season without a major piece of silverware cannot be considered anything other than a failure (in our reckoning, the Intercontinental Cup and UEFA Super Cup do not count). 

Madrid won both La Liga and the Champions League in 2023/24, so they have clearly gone backwards this term. 

Ancelotti is on his way out of the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu having finally agreed a deal to take charge of Brazil ahead of next year’s World Cup. Xabi Alonso will be his replacement, with the former Madrid midfielder set to be handed the reins before the Club World Cup.

Before then, Madrid will be aiming to sign off for the La Liga season with two more wins. They travel to Sevilla this weekend, before concluding the campaign against Real Sociedad on gameweek 38.

Their upcoming opponents are now safe from relegation after a 1-0 defeat of Las Palmas last time out. The sense of relief around the Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan was palpable when the final whistle sounded on Tuesday night.

This has been a season to forget for Sevilla, but at least they can now begin planning for another year at Spain’s top table.

The main reason for Madrid’s failure this season is their record in the Clasico. Had they won one of their league meetings with Barcelona, they would be one point behind their arch-rivals.

Madrid have been just as good as Barca against the rest of the division, and they should have too much for Sevilla in this one.

Sevilla forward Alvaro Garcia Pasqual scored the only goal of the game against Las Palmas in the 52nd minute.

Real Madrid started slowly against Real Mallorca on Wednesday. Now that the title has gone, we could see something similar this weekend.

Kylian Mbappe arrived at the Bernabeu last summer hoping to win La Liga and the Champions League, not the Pichichi.

Mbappe sits at the top of the charts with two games left. He has scored 28 goals up to now, three more than Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski.

The Poland international is still not fully fit, so Mbappe is the red-hot favourite to end the campaign as Spain’s leading goal-getter.
