Remember indie developer Steve McCall and his compilation of slasher “demakes” done in the style of NES games? Well, after locking himself away for 15 months to work on his next labour of love, Steve is back with another fan effort in All Hell Unleashed. Available now on itch.io, this new title pits you against an all-star cast of the most infamous horror icons of all time in an NES-flavoured action platformer.
Amidst a realm where darkness reigns and evil lurks in every shadow, a sinister cult has unleashed chaos upon our world. Jason, Michael, Freddy, Candyman, Ghostface, Leatherface, Chucky, Pennywise, Pinhead and the Killer Klowns have been summoned thanks to a dimensional rift. As the world teeters on the brink of eternal fear, you must embark on a perilous journey to confront these iconic villains. But beware, time is of the essence, for the shattered fragments of a cursed amulet hold the key to sealing the dimensional rift and saving our world from eternal darkness.
You goal in each level is to collect 8 Dimensional Orbs to open a portal to the next area. If you open a portal and it becomes stuck somewhere, another one will spawn elsewhere in the level if you search. If you die with all 8 orbs, the portal will open automatically when you continue. Ultimately, you must collect all 10 amulet shards.
To restore your health, you can save damsels. However, killing them will reduce your health to one point. Your choices will determine the game’s ending.
If you thought this was a simple action game, you’d be wrong. Steve has gone above and beyond for this labour of love, adding not only multiple game modes, but also various Easter Eggs and classic cheat codes (including a NSFW “Disrobe Mode”).
“This is my swan song to my free NES horror fan games,” says Steve. “This game began in January 2024 when I couldn’t decide which horror franchise to tackle next.. so I crammed in as many as possible! What began as a chaotic idea turned into a fully fleshed-out game, built to the best of my amateur abilities.”
To play All Hell Unleashed, you’ll need to grab a trusty emulator like FCEUmm.
