The New York Islanders will pick first in the 2025 NHL Draft.

The Islanders won the NHL Draft Lottery on Monday, jumping up from No. 10 to No. 1 after the draw.

The San Jose Sharks had the best odds (25.5 per cent) of landing the No. 1 pick. The Sharks, of course, also selected first last year, drafting forward Macklin Celebrini out of Boston University.

For the first time in its 30-year history, the broadcast featured the drawing live in-studio, allowing viewers to follow along and learn the results at the same time as the draft lottery participants.

The Chicago Blackhawks, Nashville Predators, Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins rounded out the top five teams with the best odds through the lottery. A draw for the No. 2 pick will be held later on Monday.

Teams can only move up 10 spots in the order, meaning only the bottom 11 teams had a chance at the first pick.

At last year’s draft lottery, no teams changed places through the drawing.

Unlike in the past few years, there is no consensus projected No. 1 selection. However, defenceman Matthew Schaefer and centres Michael Misa, Caleb Desnoyers and James Hagens are expected to go at the top of the draft.

The 2025 Draft takes place on June 27-28 on Sportsnet.
