A report from scooper Daniel Richtman has been confirmed – “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Oblivion” director Joseph Kosinski is in talks to direct a new “Miami Vice” movie at Universal Pictures.
In addition, Dan Gilroy (“Nightcrawler,” “Kong: Skull Island”) is writing the script, while Dylan Clark (“The Batman”) is producing.
Michael Mann produced the original five-season 1980s TV series created by Anthony Yerkovich. It followed two detectives, Crockett and Tubbs, working undercover in Miami in the 1980s.
The show was famous for its pastel suits, contemporary music and filmmaking style which broke the form of most TV series of the type.
Mann then directed a film remake in 2006, turning it into a gritty cop thriller starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. Though scoring mixed reviews and just $163.7 million globally at the box-office at the time, it has subsequently found a cult following.
Kosinski will release his Brad Pitt-led “F1” film this Summer, and both he and producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently sparked a bidding war for a UFO conspiracy feature. That film is expected to go forward before this.
