‘More urgent’ – Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson highlights transfer priority

Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson has called for the club to sign a new left-back ahead of a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold. Currently Andy Robertson and Konstantinos Tsimikas serve as the cover in that role but neither have been at their best this campaign. Robertson joined Liverpool from Hull in 2017 and Tsimikas joined three years later from OlympiacosGetty During Jurgen Klopp’s tenure Robertson and Alexander-Arnold were regarded as the best full-back duo in the Premier League.   During the 2019/20 title winning season Robertson recorded 15 goal involvements and Alexander-Arnold tallied 19. They tormented teams with their darting runs down the wing and near-perfect incisive passes and crosses. But this season, Robertson has failed to score or assist, highlighting his decline, now aged 31.  In the absence of Real Madrid-bound full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold through injury, Conor Bradley has stepped up and become a fan favourite. When asked if Liverpool will sign another right-back after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure to Real Madrid, Lawrenson said, “I think they might sign a left-back and a right-back. “And the thing about Trent, going once the guy comes in, he’s under pressure isn’t he? He knows that everybody’s kind of looking and thinking, are you going to be as good as Trent Alexander-Arnold? In the times he’s played [Conor Bradley], he’s played very, very well.” He continued: “It’s different when all of a sudden you know you’re going to play every single game.  “So I think they’ll sign a right-back, I think they’ll sign a left-back. Left-back probably more urgently than a right-back.” Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez was mentioned in the conversation as a possible replacement. Robertson and Alexander-Arnold have earned legendary status on MerseysideGetty The 21-year-old has been a bright light for the Cherries who are eyeing a European spot, with two goals and five assists this campaign. According to reports Bournemouth will demand a fee in the region of £45million. Additionally, Lawrenson claims Liverpool will sign ‘four or five players’ to strengthen their title winning side. The contract renewals of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk will provide a solid foundation for a successful transfer window. And Lawrenson also believes ‘they’ll let [Darwin] Nunez go’ and replace him with another striker. Discussing the striker, Lawrenson said: “He’s got so much pace, he stretches opposition defences.  “I just think his head is full of mush. I think they’ll cash in on him and sell him. If you’re a striker you’ve got to score goals.”
