Asking why I was hired, can it cause damage?

A senior team member of mine just got fired because they no longer 'fitted the strategy'. "They were hired because of their great expertise in sector X, but now that sector X collapsed, we don't need them anymore", that's how the news was shared. That made me wonder: if I know on which premise I was hired, I can somehow use this knowledge to take better decisions. A similar question was already discussed here, at least partially: I already know I am cheap (I'm junior) and not the first choice (the info leaked spontaneously without me asking). Otherwise, I have no clue, as whatever I can do other teammates can do better. I wouldn't mind a clearer answer though. So, my question is: Can it in any way damage me that I ask why I was hired in the first place?
