Mads Mikkelsen will play a chef alongside Boyd Holbrook as a prisoner in Oscar-nominated filmmaker Ramin Bahrani’s new film “Last Meals”.
The prison drama shoots in Dublin later this year comes from an AMPAS Nicholl Award-winning screenplay by Justin Piasecki (“Relay”).
Mikkelsen stars as Walter Karat, a former White House Chef whose fall from grace lands him in the kitchen of a maximum security prison cooking for death row inmates.
Holbrook is Jeffrey Reed, an inmate who decides to go on a hunger strike and whose constant rejection of his meals frustrates him at every turn.
Their animosity reaches a boiling point until Walter confronts Reed, triggering an unexpected deeper connection – Walter starts to believe Reed is innocent. As the two bond, Walter is determined to find out the truth.
One of the world’s most infamous meals, the Ortolan, comes into play in the story in some way. The French delicacy involves a small Eurasian bird that is drowned in cognac, roasted and eaten whole.
Renée Tab and Christopher Tuffin will produce for Sentient Entertainment. The project was first unveiled back in 2022 with Delroy Lindo attached to star as the chef and former “Lost” actor Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje directing.
