MG S5 EV variants revealed – Com and Lux fr RM115k est; early birds get RM5k discount and free wallbox

The MG S5 EV, which was previewed last month, is the main star of MG’s Malaysia Autoshow (MAS) 2025 stand here at MAEPS. However, the rival to the Proton eMas 7 and BYD Atto 3 isn’t quite ready to be launched yet. That will happen very soon, but MG Motor Malaysia is providing more info this round.

We already know that the estimated price for the EV is from RM115,000; now we know what the early birds will get. Place a booking at MAS 2025 from May 9-15 with a fee of RM500 and you’ll get ’10 times more savings’, which means that the early bird discount is RM5,000 off the eventual RRP. The package also includes a complimentary 7kW wallbox for home charging.

MG Motor Malaysia has also revealed the variant names for the S5 EV, and they are Com and Lux. The base Com offers a choice of 49 kWh or 62 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, good for WLTP rated range of 340 km and 430 km respectively. The Lux is exclusively paired to the 62 kWh battery. All have a rear motor with 170 PS and 250 Nm of torque – MG stresses that the S5 is the only RWD EV in its class.

As for charging, max rates are 7 kW AC and 120 kW DC, with the Lux taking the latter to 150 kW, a rate that enables 10-80% SoC top ups in 26 minutes. Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) is available to power your appliances.

Standard kit include LED headlamps with ‘Racing Flag’ themed DRLs, a rear LED light bar that grows ‘wings’ at the sides, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen with voice command, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and MG’s iSmart app connectivity.

The Lux adds on 18-inch alloys, a panoramic sunroof, leather-fabric seats with perforated MG logos, power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated leather steering wheel, wireless phone charging pad, six speakers, powered tailgate and a 360-degree surround view camera. Safety wise, it’s a full ADAS pack with auto high beam.

At 4,476 mm long, 1,849 mm wide and 1,621 mm tall, the S5 is 139 mm shorter, 52 mm narrower and 49 mm lower than the Proton eMas 7 and has a 20 mm shorter wheelbase. It’s slightly larger than the BYD Atto 3, though. There’s no frunk, but the 453-litre boot can be expanded to 1,441 litres with the rear seats folded, including the space under the boot floor. Test drives are available at MAS 2025, so you can try the S5 out for size.

Five colours are available – Arctic White, Monument Silver, Camden Grey, Dynamic Red and Elegant Latte. Once again, the estimated price is from RM115k and the early bird package at MAS 2025 (May 9-15) dangles a RM5k discount and free wallbox.
