McKenna extends record point streak to 54 games to open WHL finals

The bigger stage did nothing to faze Medicine Hat Tigers star Gavin McKenna.

With the WHL Championship opening Friday night, McKenna helped his Tigers take a 1-0 series lead in a 4-1 win over the Spokane Chiefs with a pair of assists to extend his point streak to 54 games.

Entering the finals on the already record-breaking 53-game point streak, the 17-year-old assisted on what stood as the game-winning goal on Bryce Pickford’s first-period tally before picking up a second helper on Tanner Molendyk’s empty-netter late in the third.

The assist on Pickford’s goal game on a sensational solo effort, where McKenna stickhandled his way into the zone before leaving the puck on a platter for his teammate, who buried the goal from the slot.

McKenna, 17, is the heavy favourite to go first overall in the 2026 NHL Draft.

The Whitehorse native was second in WHL scoring this season with 41 goals and 88 assists for 129 points in 56 games.

Andrew Basha and Ethan Neutens also scored for Medicine Hat in the win, while Berkly Catton was the lone Spokane scorer.

Basha, a 2024 draftee of the Calgary Flames, was making his return to the Tigers lineup for the first time since Dec. 28, 2024, due to injury.

Harrison Meneghin was also exceptional in net for the Tigers, making 36 saves in the series-opening win.

McKenna was named the winner of the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy as the WHL Player of the Year with 41 goals and 129 points in the regular season.

Game 2 of the series goes Sunday in Medicine Hat.
